Food for Thought: July 17-23
It was sooooo hot in DC this week. I couldn't complain much, though, because my friend Jim came to visit this weekend! Hosting friends is one of the best things in life, especially when they're as wonderful as he is. Our Friday night activity is the first item on the list - read on for everything I've been loving this week.
I saw Wig Out at Studio Theatre on Friday night, and it knocked my socks off. Tarell Alvin McCraney of Moonlight fame wrapped the audience up in the world of African-American ball culture, and I never wanted to leave. Everything about this play is captivating, from the set design to the music to the shade, and it doesn't hurt that the actors are drop-dead gorgeous. Watch Paris Is Burning on Netflix before you go!
Flex Your Heart Radio is a podcast by Lacy Davis about "body positivity, fitness, feminism, recovery, taking risks, and crushing it at life." I can't believe I didn't know about this amazing show hosted by another feminist vegan! I highly recommend starting with the episode in which Lacy interviews Melissa Fabello about health as a performance of beauty.
The radical GreenBoxShop has been killing it with new t-shirt designs lately. They made my "Dismantle White Feminism" tee and have been unveiling new slogans almost daily. I love shirts as a way to start conversation, and they have tops with everything from "Fuck Donald Trump" to "Chill with that misogyny" emblazoned across the front. They kindly gave me a promo code this month, so you can save 10% with the code "DOYEL10." Go get your own rad shirt, babes!
The Transforming Your Money Story episode on the podcast Budgets and Cents is possibly my favorite episode of any podcast ever. We tell ourselves a lot of stories about money, and I am definitely still figuring out mine and how they affect my personal finances. The best thing about this conversation is that Cait and Carrie are discovering their own stories as they record - it feels like listening in on a private conversation.
The title of the article 11 Ways to Relax That Aren't Exercise or Meditation says it all. I'm all for a long run or a Headspace session to chill out, but let's be honest, sometimes we're just not in the mood. Try drawing, cooking a complicated recipe, or going on an ice cream walk instead.
And that's it for now, my little blueberries! Remember that Sunday is Imperfect Day and capitalism makes Monday hard, so go easy on yourself. Follow me on Instagram for #SelfCareSunday tips, eat some food, and get some sleep.
