I'm On YouTube...?
I first got into YouTube when I went vegan in March 2016 - I know, way late in the YouTube game. I had been vegetarian for a couple years, but going vegan was still a significant lifestyle change, and (like all new vegans) I didn't really know what I was doing. YouTube videos proved to be the best resource to help me figure out what to eat, how to cook, and how to deal with people's weird reactions to my veganism (trust me, there have been a lot). Anyways, the vegan YouTube community was my gateway drug, if you will, and I've been following a wide variety of YouTube channels ever since.
I never pictured getting in front of the camera myself, but traveling provided a perfect entry point for me to start making videos. I've been vlogging in every city I've visited, and now that I'm preparing to settle down (more on that later) I'll be making sit-down videos with the occasional vlog.
Getting on YouTube has been an exercise in patience, humility, and fun. As someone who has never been particularly fond of the spotlight, making YouTube videos, in theory, should feel strange. I still get self-conscious about the way I look and sound when I watch videos back, to be sure. But the truth is that making videos feels completely natural. I like talking to the camera. I guess it makes sense, since I like writing for many of the same reasons I enjoy making videos: creativity, self-expression, exploration. As a solo traveler, it also helped me feel less alone to "talk" to someone, funny as that may sound. Even though I've very rarely felt lonely while traveling, sometimes I wish that I had someone with my to share my experiences, and making vlogs is a way of sharing my adventures with you.
I'm still getting the hang of pretty much everything, but my first eight videos are up and there are many more to come. I'd love for you to join in the adventure with me.
