Mercury Retrograde and Money

Mercury Retrograde and Money

I have recently decided to pay more attention to signs. Not street signs (though I guess those are important too) but signs from the universe. I am in a long process of acknowledging and cultivating my own sense of spirituality, and so I am trying to recognize small nudges from the world around me. Astrology and tarot are part of this fun project. I don't know if I believe that the planets actually rule the rhythm of life here on Earth, but I enjoy learning about them and suspending my disbelief. An episode from my newest podcast obsession, Healers, inspired me, and I highly recommend giving it a listen. To be honest, I'm still skeptical of astrology and the like, but if I enjoy it, why not indulge?

As some of you may already know, Mercury went retrograde starting April 9th. Technically speaking, all that means is that from the vantage point of Earth, the planet Mercury appears to be spinning backwards. From an astrological perspective, however, the meaning is much more significant. The planet takes its name from the mythological messenger of the gods, and so Mercury rules commerce, travel, and communication. Consequently, Mercury retrograde is thought to sow chaos in all types of messages in our in our lives, from technology to business dealings to casual conversations. That's not necessarily bad, though - Mercury retrograde is an invitation to pause and reevaluate what is and isn't working for us. The chaos allows us to recognize and break unhealthy patterns.

This particular retrograde, which lasts until May 3rd, starts in (read: with proximity to the constellation) Taurus. Taurus, the stubborn and sturdy bull, is associated with grounding, stability, earthly pleasures, and success. The alchemical element of earth attunes us to our material needs, particularly with respect to money and resources. Astrologers praise this Mercury retrograde as an opportunity to restore order in our lives, advising us to "simplify, systematize, and work from a budget."  Combine the grounding Taurus energy with the reflectiveness inspired by Mercury retrograde, and you might see where I'm headed.

So, Mercury retrograde in Taurus was the first sign. The second was the Tarot card I pulled the morning of April 9th, the first day of the retrograde. I've been doing daily draws to familiarize myself with the meanings of the cards. On that Sunday morning, I drew the Page of Pentacles. In the Tarot, Pentacles indicate money and success, and the Page cards herald new beginnings. In fact, like Taurus, Pentacles are also connected with the earth element. According to my favorite Tarot reader, this card "asks you to grow and expand in a way that generates prosperity and wealth for the future." If it's me reading the signs, it seems like the universe is flashing a bright neon sign that I need to get my finances in order.

Inspired by these energetic nudges over the past week, I took a good, hard look at my spending. It was uncomfortable - almost painful - but I'm so happy I did, because I learned so much about myself. More on that in a post later this week! In the meantime, I invite you to reflect on what Mercury retrograde in Taurus will mean for you, check out the fun videos below, and maybe also back up your computer.
